Daily, young men and women enlist in military service…so do their families.
Boot Camp prepares the enlistee for military life but there is no boot camp for the families. I speak almost daily to new military mothers and families with many questions and concerns about boot camp thru deployments; talk about what to expect, ‘dos’ and definite don’ts, constructive coping mechanisms, the positive, and the most difficult.
My expertise comes from:
- Over nine years as a proud 82nd ABN mom (SFC, 2-505 PIR, 3rd BCT, 82nd DIV Ft. Bragg, NC-eldest son).
- Leading the 3rd BCT, 82nd ABN Division Family and Paratrooper Support Group for military families and paratroopers.
- Four over-seas deployments (Afghanistan and Iraq, one during the 2006-07 ‘surge’), one ‘state-side’ deployment in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and prep for deployment number five (upcoming).
- My younger son’s enlistment after graduating with a BS in Criminology, his injury during SF selection, ‘transition’ to the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit, and the Med Board process.
I discuss the mental and physical health issues facing our military members as well as my own personal journey…anticipatory grief, casualties, fatalities, relationships (mother-in-law/daughter-in-law), and working hard to understand both my son’s experiences, something which I have no context for. My approach is quite humorous but frank.
I am the founder of Milhealth’s Directory of Military Health Information Resources & Research, National Military Health Examiner for examiner.com, writer of “How to Be a Good Army Mom”/”How to be a Good Army Boot Camp Mom” series (applicable to all military branches).
